European residence rights

The UK left the European Union on 31 January 2020. However, during the “transition period” until 11pm on 31 December 2020, the Immigration (European Economic Area) Regulations 2016 continued to provide European residence rights for EEA nationals living in the UK.

EEA nationals who arrived in the UK before 31 December 2020 should already have applied for permission to stay in the UK under the Immigration Rules by using the EU Settlement Scheme. The deadline to apply to the EUSS was 30 June 2021. However, in some circumstances late applications may be accepted by UK Visas & Immigration.
