How to get an e-Visa

UK Visas & Immigration has now opened the e-Visa system to all applicants who have a biometric residence permit (BRP) that expires on or before 31 December 2024.

For some time now, UKVI has been issuing BRPs with an end date of 31 December 2024, including to people whose leave to remain extends past that date. The main reason for this is that physical BRPs will be replaced with a new “e-Visa” system from 1 January 2025.

If your BRP expires on 31 December 2024, you can now create an online UKVI account and upload information so that your immigration status can be connected to your national passport. The online system will be used after 31 December to prove your UK immigration status including your right to work, right to rent, and permission to re-enter or stay in the UK:

The UKVI web page now includes instructions about how to create an account and set up your e-Visa:

In order to set up a UKVI account you will normally need access to a valid passport or BRP, and a phone that is suitable to use the UKVI ID app to scan your identity document and take a selfie.

UKVI has also created videos to explain how the e-Visa system will work, including with international travel:

A number of organisations, such as Praxis and the Immigration Law Practitioners Association (ILPA), have raised concerns about how the new e-Visa system will work, particularly for vulnerable or elderly applicants who might not have access to the necessary technology.
