The Government has instructed the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) to review the financial requirements for family visa applicants within the next 9 months.

The financial requirements include the minimum income requirement and the maintenance requirement. The minimum income requirement is the minimum annual income required to sponsor a partner’s permission to enter or remain in the UK in the 5-year route to settlement.

The maintenance requirement applies to some partner applicants who received specified benefits, and to parents applying in the 5-year route.

The minimum income requirement was set at £18,600 in 2012, and increased to £29,000 in April 2024. The last Government intended to introduce further increases, ultimately to £38,700.

The instructions to the MAC are to review the financial requirements “in particular, regarding the level of the Minimum Income Requirement, the previous Government’s proposals to increase it and any other related considerations that you believe are relevant…”
